Philips Korea said on Tuesday that it has signed a reference site agreement with Asan Medical Center (AMC) in Seoul to collaborate in fully digitizing pathology diagnostics in Korea.

Under the agreement, the two will increase mutual support to expand their leadership in digital pathology, including internal and external training support and site visits to medical institutions in Korea and abroad, utilizing the Philips IntelliSite Pathology Solution.

The Philips Intellisight Pathology Solution is an automated digital pathology image generation, visualization, and management system based on a slide scanner and an image management system with servers, storage, and viewers. The system was first approved in Europe in 2014, followed by the U.S. in 2017, and in Korea in 2018.

Conventional pathology reading systems manually analyze tissue samples placed on glass slides under an optical microscope.

However, digital reading systems provide allow slide data to be automatically categorized based on codes generated during scanning, directly viewed on the monitor, and saved to storage.

From slide preparation to organization, classification, reading, and storage have become much more efficient.

In recent years, digital pathology solutions have been increasingly adopted by university hospitals and pathology departments to maximize the efficiency of pathology diagnosis and enable precision medicine.

Among them, AMC has already completed the digital conversion of all analog pathology work in January 2022. AMC treats 960,000 cancer patients and performs more than 900,000 pathology diagnoses annually.

Currently, AMC has 11 high-performance scanners to digitize biopsy slides, a petabyte capacity server, and a 10-gigabyte independent network, making it the world's largest digital pathology infrastructure for a single institution.

"We are delighted to collaborate with AMC to provide our long-standing experience in digital pathology to transform all hospital processes to be patient-centered based on optimal care infrastructure," said Philips Korea CEO Park Jae-in.
